I doubt the nail (or likely a screw) is causing your charging problem. The nail is there for the exact reason thscott stated--it's an old mechanic trick to keep your battery posts tight. You need to give people some information about your vehicle so they can at least form an educated guess.

Saturday, I took my car to my Honda dealer and they replaced the battery. When I went back to go pick up my car, I turned on my car and saw it was showing it had a "Charging System Problem". I immediately told the service center and they took my car back for an additional two hours.

A Battery needs approx 2 volts over it's voltage to charge. So, if your battery is ok, you should be able to read approx 12 volts without the Ody running, approx 14 with it running.
