SDI = The 2 1/2" Wesson 44 mag "fixed barrel" revolvers. There were two batches of these made. The first was with standard serial numbers and either 25 or 50 were produced. The second batch had a gold plated trigger and a special serial number with the letter prefix "SDI". 50 were made. This was a special order from the distributor (SDI)
The serial number is YG4-PT01xx. I got it from a friend who bought it from a gun shop in Ohio about the '04-'05 time frame. It has the box and a hang tag indicating it was a trade in at the shop on 11-22-04. The slide has no Patriot roll mark.Hi Dan. First, it is indeed a .32 Safety Hammerless Second Model. There were other S/N designations over the years. I know that if the S/N starts with 13xxxxx, then the pistol was made in 2013 and if the S/N starts with 14xxxxx, then the pistol was made in 2014. Welcome to the forum. Your gun is a 38 M&P from about 1950. The serial number is the one on the butt that starts with the letter C. In 1958 S&W started using model numbers. Guns like your 38 M&P became known as the model 10. They are the most commonly produced S&W revolver.
Generally the Pre war serial # on the butt reads with barrel to the right including I frame serial numbers on the forestrap. After WW II the serial # reads with barrel to the left (except for serial numbers on the forestrap thru 1957). Pre-War serial #s are centered on the butt, unless there was a swivel.
