Subaru crosstrek making noise when off.

This time I went out to see what this "noise" was. Well it is a slight hum, almost sounds like a small electric motor. I crawl under and seems to be coming from the differential. Could not feel anything. The car was not driven for four hours at this time. It really is the exhaust heat shields, extensive on the Subaru because the exhaust is directly under the engine. NO PROBLEM with ticking after shutdown. The world has had this same ticking with exhaust systems forever, but the Foz is worse because of the large number of heat shields on it.
