I'd probably recommend going with LBG at least until you get a better grasp of the fundamentals; they tend to be more forgiving. If you do decide to go with HBG, consider attaching a shield at first.

LBG has fanning maneuver for a 10% or so more damage for a duration. (Not to mention that this is in competetion with Jyratodus' LBG which Rpf Spread 2) For Spread, HBG might have the edge.
