They began "manufacturing" it in 1938 (some say late 37) for "release" to the public in 1939. They most definitely were manufacturing First Variations in 1939 but by that time were probably well into the 4 digit serial number range. The K prefix will date it to 1953, which mans it was the last full year for Ballard rifling. Some 54's have it, but not many. The 24" barrel means it is a rifle, and it's pistol gripped stock. The part about no forear cap is unusual, as I don't believe any of the early 39a's came without a forearm cap.
