Oct 13, 2019 · DrDoctor. I recently purchased a S&W 686 4" version. I'm going to give it a full polish, as I did with my S&W 460V (3lb/12oz of chrome-like stainless beauty with a custom-made Kansas Black Walnut grip). The grip on the 686 is black plastic with a rubber covering, and frankly - it leaves a lot to be desired.

He shipped it back for replacement. The replacement gun which I still have is a "beauty" -- shoots well and looks good. Placed the slide on the frame, but could not get the slide back far enough for the slide lock to engage. Removed the slide and rechecked the guide rod/spring for proper fit, alignment, etc. Still could not get the slide back far enough to manually engage the slide lock.
Definitely a great concealed carry pistol that offers a double stack magazine capacity; 10 rnd and 12 rnd. People don’t like the trigger but I think I like it. The .38 Masterpiece target revolver was made from the late 1940's until 1982, then reintroduced in 1991 with a full lug barrel and made to 1999. Your gun shipped in 1974. Value is determined mostly by condition. These guns often sell in the $500-600 range if the bluing is excellent.

The 686 was built for a specific reason, and that's to take the stresses of the faster and lighter hypersonic 110-125 grain 357 magnum bullets. The DA pull was off the scale on my spring gauge, but estimated to be about 9 1/2#. They came in 2 and 4 inch barrels. Measure from the muzzle end to the face of the cylinder. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. My 617 is a 6" and i have mounted a scope on it. That said, I have a 4" model 18 that is a favorite shooter.The two guns have very different trigger and grip safety systems. The 1911 has 3 different length triggers avaliable, as well as 2 different main spring housings, (arched or flat) and different width grips, all on these can be used the custom fit the gun to your hand and trigger finger length.
