Hi all, As the title suggests, I'm curious about the quality of life of a community Heme/Onc physician. I'm currently deciding between a hybrid community vs academic job. A little about my stats: - NonUS-IMG PGY2, on H1B visa at a known (2nd-tier) University IM program in the south. - Step1 high 250s, Step 2 low 260s, Step 3 low 230s (unfortunately). - 10 medschool+residency research experiences resulting in 14 total pubs (3 published, 5 submitted status, 1 book chapter, 6 national posters).

My goals are attending the program with the best reputation for good clinical training, diverse clinical research and med ed opportunities, and strong academic heme/onc opportunities and match record.

IM -> heme/onc is a much more uncertain option. While getting into any IM program as a USMD grad isn't hard, with a 226 it may be more uncertain whether you can match into heme-onc fellowships (which at the present time remain competitive since there are many IMGs who will apply to heme-onc).Messages. 335. Single board programs are 12+12 but some will tack on a 3rd year to "help you with your research" (AKA, get cheap labor out of you). Some programs are 2 full clinical years + 12 mos of research.

Financially, heme onc probably makes 1.5-2x more than Hospitalist. Money is not too important to me and I feel like I would be very happy already with a $250k+ Hospitalist salary working half of the year. As a Hospitalist, I could always moonlight or take on side gigs such as SNF director to supplement income.
