When it goes into reduced engine, the ECM turns off the injector on the cylinder that is knocking, and it goes away. Guessing you can figure out which cylinder it is by turning off injectors with a scan tool.Check fuses/relays. If the Injection Pump Fuse blew it would cause loss of communication. Sounds a lot like the old Cummins VP44 issue. The relay that gave the injection pump power had a faulty socket in the fuse block and would drop power and it would throw a communication code almost exactly like that and result in a no start condition. 2.

Has trouble starting changed fuel filter and water separator was throwing low rail pressure code. Took to shop as problem persisted. Shop said they replaced a fuel line and fixed it, problem not fixed now truck will not start.For instance, I would go to the under hood fuse and relay box and try jumpering around the crank relay. The system was loaded up with air so I made up an auxiliary tank to the inlet of the filter housing, primer pumps hard after 4-5 pushes. Change the fuel filter often, the Duramax fuel system is fed by suction from the fuel tank and the slightest filter plugging will starve and overwork the fuel pump.
