Upon inspection there was the classic hairline crack in the fore end next to the receiver bottom side. I bought the gun on a online auction and this cosmetic defect was not mentioned. The insert in the forearm you picture is there to help prevent cracking. Later versions have a piece of manmade material at the same location. It is probably plastic or nylon. This is my first Auto-5 that hasn't already had the forearm cracked or without synthetic furniture, and I'd like to keep it that way.
