Players have been trying to make useful ones for almost as long, and 3.X has had many ways to build them. The Magus is just the first decent (imo) "gish in a can" class. Pathfinder doesn't have a Player's Handbook. Fighter Training also gets you Critical Versatility if you're human, and Critical Mastery. Both of which are nice for a character ...
Outside of thief rogues, archer builds and druids, I can't see any reason to ever build dex in pf2e given how trivial it is to get heavy armor prof for bulwark. In this case, freeing up dex allows a magus to have ideal stats by investing in str/con/int/wis and further boosting by taking dex and cha flaws (usually for more con).
So in this way, the "Ancient" heritage is a genetic one. And it really helps the build by granting a dedication at level 1. Gotta be nimble to dodge, climb, duck, jump and so on. A bodyguard needs to stay alert. Use those dashes and dodges to escape unharmed.
