If you think it might be a rod bearing, pull the filter cut it open, unroll the filter media and take a look for metal, you can also order an oil sample kit, take the sample send it in and it will also tell the tale, if its a bearing. Sounds like a spun bearing to me, probably connecting rod. When it goes into reduced engine, the ECM turns off the injector on the cylinder that is knocking, and it goes away.
