I would take the front cover off. There aren't any dowels in that cover. I didn't have to use a speedy sleeve to stop the leak from grooves cut by the old seal on the crank. Put new diesel in it and it started right up. I am in the process of a complete overhaul and have converted to the d17 oil pump (internal regulator) with all the plumbing changes. I am not concerned with originality as it will be a working unit.

Jul 17, 2010 · WD45/WD Engine Oil Weight. I've been running a good quality 10W-30 conventional engine oil in my 1955 WD45 and 1949 WD ever since I've owned them. We buy bulk Chevron 15W-40 engine oil (55 gallon drums) for our irrigation engines. We run Chevy 454s/350s and an occasional Minnie motor and have never tore one apart yet (knock on wood). Those old Oil Pull tractors used oil as the coolant and were able to run much hotter. Of course the upper limit of how warm you can run an engine is dependent of how much heat the various engine components, including the oil, can handle. Predetonation can be an issue with hot engines too. Allis Wd45.Oil bath air cleaners worked pretty good. Probably a lot cheaper to maintain than the paper ones.
